Musa balbisiana Gigantea, or King Kong, is a tree in the Musaceae family. Musa balbisiana is very robust, and the stem reaches a height of 16-20 feet. This is a very fast-growing wild banana. It has gorgeous upright leaves up to 9 feet long and about 2 feet wide. Leaves are green above and paler green underneath, and the midrib is green to yellow-green. Musa balbisiana Gigantea produces huge yellow flowers, followed by large clusters of bananas. Fruit is seeded and inedible. It grows at some altitude so that it may tolerate cool temperatures. Grow in full or part sun. Zones 9-11.
Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
