How Many Weed Seeds do You Need to Grow a Plant?

To grow weed, you need high quality marijuana seeds. But how many seeds do you need to grow weed? And then there’s the question: how many marijuana plants do you want to grow?

This ultimately determines how many seeds you need. Based on your wishes, you calculate the number of marijuana seeds you need.

How many seeds do you need to grow weed?

Basically, you need one cannabis seed per weed plant. After all, from one seed a single plant grows. However, it is possible that not every seed germinates. After all, you are dealing with a natural product. It is therefore advisable to have an extra seed on hand.

Factors that determine the number of seeds per plant

So, what if you plan to grow five plants and one or more seeds don’t germinate? Then you won’t achieve the intended yield, and you have to purchase seeds again. It’s therefore wise to use several seeds per plant.

In order to calculate exactly how many cannabis seeds you need, you have to take two determining factors into account:

Type of seed (regular or feminized)

In this blog, we assume that you buy cannabis seeds for growing cannabis. For this, you can choose between regular seeds or feminized cannabis seeds. Both types differ from each other and have an influence on the final result. The differences are explained below.

Regular seeds

With regular cannabis seeds, the genus of the plant has not yet been determined. When choosing regular seeds, the chance that the seed will develop into a female plant is about 60%. The chance that the seed develops into a male plant is therefore 40%. And because male plants do not produce buds (read: marijuana), you need several marijuana seeds to increase the chance that you will eventually grow a female plant.

Feminized seeds

With feminized cannabis seeds, you don’t have the risk of a flowering male plant. Because female seeds produce 99.9% of a female weed plant. This is why most growers choose feminized seeds or autoflowering seeds

Autoflowering seeds are basically feminized seeds, but have the advantage that they flower automatically (read more about the difference between feminized cannabis seeds and autoflower seeds). However, feminized seeds are more expensive than regular seeds. Depending on your budget and growing skills, you will choose the type of weed seed.

Germination rate

In addition to the type of cannabis seed, nature always has an influence on the germination process. After all, the cannabis seed is a natural product and this means that not every seed is viable and germinates.

From experience, we know that 93% of the cannabis seeds grow into a plant. This is of course a very high success rate, but not 100%. So you will have to use extra seeds in order to have the certainty of eventually becoming a weed plant.

We therefore advise you to take into account an average germination percentage of 90% when calculating the number of seeds you need for your cultivation. This gives just that little extra certainty.

How many seeds does it take to grow weed?

Based on the above information, it’s quite easy to calculate how many seeds you need to grow weed. For your convenience, we have placed the results in the table below.

How Many Seeds Can a Weed Plant Produce?

Unfortunately, there is no exact answer to how many seeds can a weed plant produce. The exact amount of seeds a weed plant can produce depends on how long the cannabis plant was pollinated for. Nowadays in places like Amsterdam, the weed has been harvested with a technique called sinsemilla, or no seeds.

How Many Seeds Does a Marijuana Plant Produce?

The number of seeds produced by a marijuana plant is too many to count! Before we can answer how many seeds you can get from a weed plant, we have to tell you how a cannabis plant would produce seeds. If there is a male flowering plant within 300 meters of any feminized cannabis plant, the pollen of the male would immediately attach to the sticky icky female’s flowers and cause seeds. Unfortunately, if there are seeds in female flowers, the potency of THC is reduced on average by 30%

How Many Seeds Can You Get From a Weed Plant?

Before finding out how many seeds can a weed plant produce, it is also important to know why do you need seeds produced from your marijuana plant. If you are breeding cannabis and you want to make new strains from Regular parents (male and female plants) you will be happy to know that upon harvest, how many seeds does a cannabis plant produce will be too many to count! Unfortunately the same applies if you have a feminized plant and it comes in contact with male cannabis pollen.

This could be due to any kind of causes, like a pesky neighbour that is not careful while breeding his/her own strains, or if you have a hermaphrodite plant, or got Regular seeds and forgot to cull the males, your grow will be pollinised and eventually fertilized. This would be the equivalent of the plant being pregnant!

How Many Seeds Can A Cannabis Plant Produce?

You will not be able to notice the seeds inside your plants until its time to harvest and they are practically popping out of the buds. Unfortunately, by this time it will be too late and your cannabis will not be great to smoke, but every single seed is another plant. Although another set of questions to bring up at this point would be how many male seeds does a cannabis plant produce and how many female seeds does a marijuana seed produce?

You will have to plant all the marijuana seeds and find out for yourself.

How much weed can you get from growing one plant?

As states legalize weed and the plant becomes more accepted, more people are trying out their green thumbs by growing their own weed at home. Most states with legal weed allow one person to grow six plants at their residence and an entire household to grow 12 plants. Some allow less, and some allow more.

(To see how many plants your state allows you to grow at home, check out this table).

But how much actual weed is that in dried buds that you can smoke? An ounce? A pound? Two pounds? The tricky thing is, all weed plants aren’t the same size, and many factors affect how big a plant will get and how dense its buds become.

We’ll go through those factors and talk a little bit about the harvest process to estimate how much weed you can get from one plant.

How much bud from one weed plant?

Many factors affect how big a plant gets, but generally speaking, if you are growing a healthy plant, you can expect these yields from one weed plant:

  • Outdoor plant: ½ pound of buds, or about 224g
  • Indoor plant: ¼ pound of buds, or about 112g

Note that these are estimates. When growing outdoors, plants can usually get massive because they aren’t restricted to space—it’s not uncommon to get closer to a pound a plant or more.

When growing indoors, you’re often limited by space—a plant can’t get as big in a grow tent as in a big, open basement. You’re also limited by how powerful your grow light is. For example, Leafly editor David Downs harvested 150g from one indoor plant with one 200W Black Dog LED light. The company said that light maxes out around a half-pound of buds, or 224g.

Also, these estimates are for healthy plants. If a plant becomes nutrient-deficient, gets bugs or mold, or doesn’t receive enough light, expect a lot less.

How long will one plant’s worth of bud last you?

However big your plant gets, you’ll likely have more flower than you know what to do with. Many people will save a certain amount of flower for smoking, and make edibles, concentrates, and other weed products with the rest of their harvest.

Consider how much weed you smoke in a day, week, or month. For reference, a gram is about two medium joints or 3-4 bowls. Do you smoke a gram a day or a week? Two grams a day or a week?

Using the above yield estimate of ¼ lb., or 112 grams, for one medium-to-large-sized indoor plant, if you smoke one gram a day, that one plant would last you 112 days, or just under four months! Two grams a day would last you just under two months, and half a gram a day—or an eighth a week—would last you eight months.

This will help give you a sense of how many plants you should grow. If you’re growing indoors, you can grow one plant at a time, harvest it, and start another, keeping a continuous cycle of growing.

If growing outdoors, you may only get one harvest a year. Remember, check out how many plants you can legally grow in your state here.
