Plant enzymes then convert the CBGa into a combination of the three major cannabinoid precursor compounds: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). The combination will depend on the unique cannabis strain they are derived from.

CBDA is a non-psychoactive compound that serves as a precursor to CBD. More specifically, CBDA is decarboxylated to create CBD, meaning it is heated. This can happen instantly if smoked or vaped, or slowly if the plant material is left to dry in the sun or even at room temperature.

Cannabidiolic acid can, therefore, be thought of as raw CBD. CBDA is most often found in the live or raw hemp plants bred for high CBD levels.

UPDATE 1/12/2022: An article was written on Forbes.com “Study Finds Cannabis Compounds Prevent Infection By Covid-19 Virus” shares some new, interesting findings of CBDA and mentions – “…researchers found that two cannabinoid acids commonly found in hemp varietals of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, also known as researchers found that two cannabinoid acids commonly found in hemp varietals of cannabis, cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, also known as CBDA, can bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. By binding to the spike protein, the compounds can prevent the virus from entering cells and causing infection, potentially offering new avenues to prevent and treat the disease.” The article goes on to say – “Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use, these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2,” the researchers wrote in an abstract of the study.”

What Are The Potential Benefits?

The reason that cannabinoids like THC and CBD have been studied so much more than CBDA is because CBDA and other acidic forms of cannabinoids are not considered to be pharmacologically active. This means that they don’t affect the ECS in the same way that their decarboxylated forms do. Therefore, most research has focused on CBD instead of CBDA.

Recent CBDA Research

But recent research shows that raw CBDA oil has its own unique potential. One study showed that CBDA could act as an effective anti-inflammatory agent.

In this study, CBDA was found to be more proficient than THC at blocking COX-2, an enzyme produced when inflammation is present. The same study found that the acidic component of CBDA plays a vital role in its ability to inhibit COX-2.

This is evident when you consider that it gradually decarboxylates, even just at room temperature. However, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the cannabis scientist who first synthesized THC and CBD, said at the 2019 CannMed conference that his research team discovered a way to transform unstable CBDA into a more stable compound.

Additionally, CBDA appears to share most of the benefits CBD users seek, such as anti-anxiety properties and more.

Is CBDA Better Than CBD?

Well, until we have concrete evidence from human testing, it’s too early to say! However, early research suggests that raw CBD oil can be just as, if not more, effective at treating things like depression, nausea, and inflammation. It may also have special properties that CBD does not, making it an option for different treatments.

CBDA shows promise as an anticonvulsant and may even have antibacterial, antioxidant, and cancer-preventing potential (specifically breast cancer). When you first think about cannabis derivatives, you probably think of two different components: THC and CBD. Most people are familiar with how both of these substances work. THC produces the “high” associated with cannabis use, although it also has some therapeutic applications. CBD, on the other hand, produces no “high” and has its own separate benefits.

You might not be aware that there are more than a hundred other compounds in the cannabis plant. One of these is Cannabidiolic acid, also known as CBDA. So, what’s the difference between CBDA vs. CBD? Like CBD, CBDA is found naturally in the cannabis plant, both in its hemp and marijuana variations. In fact, CBDA is the precursor chemical that produces CBD.

Even though these are two very similar compounds, important differences between them need to be discussed. Here, we’ll explain why you might want to use CBDA vs. CBD, as well as what benefits you can gain from both compounds. Let’s take a closer look!

What is Cannabidiolic acid?

Cannabidiolic acid, or CBDA for short, is a natural compound that the cannabis plant produces. CBDA is a relatively recent discovery and was not even isolated until 1996. It’s primarily found in raw, unprocessed cannabis plants.

The main difference between CBDA and CBD is that CBDA is a precursor chemical to Cannabidiol (CBD), similar but not acidic. What that means is that it’s a natural compound found in the raw plant. Is it the Same as CBD?

CBD and CBDA are both cannabinoids. This is a class of chemicals that are found in the cannabis plant. In fact, they’re also found in the human body and are used by the endocannabinoid system to regulate normal bodily functions. This is why cannabinoids are often considered healthy dietary supplements. In total, the cannabis plant contains at least 113 cannabinoids. However, the exact concentration will depend on the type of plant and whether or not the plant has been decarboxylated.

What is Decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation sounds like a complex process, so let’s break it down as simply as possible. As we mentioned, a major difference between CBDA vs. CBD is that CBDA is an acid. This is because there’s a chemical chain called “carboxyl” attached to the molecule. When the cannabis is left to cure, the carboxyl chain will slowly break down. When this happens, CBDA and other acidic cannabinoids lose their acidity. They also become more active. Decarboxylation can be accelerated by other processes, like heating in particular.

In live, growing cannabis plants, CBD is only found in relatively small quantities. By drying or heating the plant, producers can convert the CBDA into CBD. In most cannabis plants, CBDA is present in only very small amounts, although some plants have been bred to contain balanced levels of CBDA and THCA. Hemp plants, in particular, are known for their high-CBDA content and trace amounts of THCA.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin work by inhibiting the effects of these enzymes. Depending on these drugs for the long-term, can cause damage to the gastrointestinal tract.

Guelph University researchers in Ontario looked at the effects of CBD compared to CBDA on different types of vomiting and nausea. Researchers found that CBDA was a potent medicine against nausea and vomiting caused by toxin- and motion-induced vomiting and nausea.

In particular, the research found that CBDA was incredibly effective at reducing anticipatory nausea. This occurs when a person feels nauseous right before chemotherapy treatment. Since this form of nausea has no known treatments, CBDA is an incredibly promising route.

In a separate study , the research team tested the effects of a CBDA and ondansetron, an anti-nausea drug. The team found that even a very low dose of CBDA improves the drug’s antiemetic effect. A CBDA dose 1000 times less than CBD has the same effect.

Anti-Tumor

A preclinical study focusing on the down regulation Cox-2 enzymes found that CBDA could help suppress the spread of a specific type of breast cancer cells. In this type of cancer, the concentration of Cox-2 is higher than average.

During the study, CBDA was used for a period of 48 hours. While it helped inhibit Cox-2, it also reduced the effectiveness of the Id-1 protein, associated with inducing cancer cell growth and survival. In addition, CBDA seems to increase Sharp-1 expression, associated with suppressing breast cancer metastasis.

While more studies are needed into its effects on cancer, CBDA is showing great promise in its suppression of harmful cells in the body.

Synthetic CBDA

Due to the exciting therapeutic potential of CBDA, researchers have attempted to create synthetic versions that may be used for therapeutic applications. In particular, professor Mechoulam has created a patented synthetic CBDA methyl ester.

A slight change in the chemical structure makes this methyl ester derivative more stable than its natural form. Researchers have been studying this derivative’s effects on nausea and vomiting, anxiety, depression, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Synthetic CBDA may be on the horizon but there is no guarantee that it is better functioning than its natural counterpart. For now, users can test out the effects of CBDA through its natural form.

Is CBDA Legal?

CBDA is often seen as a distinct cannabinoid from CBD, but the reality is that CBDA is largely treated like CBD in the U.S. and international market.

In the U.S., the 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp production. Because of this, CBD products began to flood the market. Under the law, CBD products must contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. Cut-off limits vary by country.

Because it is non intoxicating, CBDA is completely legal in nearly all states. In states that prohibit the sale of THC, CBDA products must not contain any THC.

New study finds cannabis compounds block coronavirus proteins

A study published this week by researchers at Oregon State University found some hemp compounds have the ability to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells.

Findings of the study led by Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute, were published this week in the Journal of Natural Products.

Hemp, known scientifically as cannabis sativa, is a source of fiber, food and animal feed, and multiple hemp extracts and compounds are added to cosmetics, body lotions, dietary supplements and food, van Breemen said.

“We identified several cannabinoid ligands and ranked them by affinity to the spike protein,” van Breemen said. “The two cannabinoids with the highest affinities for the spike protein were CBDA and CBGA, and they were confirmed to block infection.”

So what’re the differences between CBD, CBDA, CBGA and marijuana plants you’d buy at a dispensary?

CBD, an abbreviation for cannabidiol, doesn’t produce any psychoactive effects. It’s likely what you see at some pharmacies, health stores or dispensaries.

It’s a very versatile compound, which makes it ideal for oils, gummies, lotions, creams and other products. Hemp contains a lot of CBD.

But CBD is not the compound that was tested in the Oregon State study. CBD is activated in hemp plants from its original form — CBDA.

CBDA, known as cannabidiolic acid, is secreted in the stems, leaves and flowers of a cannabis plant. When the plant undergoes activation (a process with heat), the acid is removed from the CBDA, activating CBD.

They have similar compounds, but CBDA is not as versatile. It’s usually extracted by “juicing” plant material, and can be added to foods, drinks, or used in tinctures, concentrated herbal extracts.

But basically, CBDA is the raw form of CBD. And it’s not as easy to find. But you can buy it. (It has not been studied as much as CBD)

CBGA, known as cannabigerolic acid, is considered the “mother cannabinoid,” because without it, there is no CBD, CBDA or THC.

CBGA compounds are similar to other cannabinoids, but it hasn’t been studied nearly as much as the others. It’s non-intoxicating. Enzymes called synthases are responsible for converting the CBGA into molecules such as THCA, the raw, unactivated molecule that converts to THC after heat is applied.

Again, you can find this in oils and tinctures online, but it’s harder to find and at times, pretty expensive, because it’s harder to extract.

What about smoking marijuana?

At this point, it doesn’t appear that just smoking marijuana, even a heavy CBD strain, will produce the effects reported in this study. We don’t have enough information to suggest it.

CBDA or CBGA products, like oils, offering these in their raw form, do not work the same in marijuana products, which usually include high levels of THC, the psychoactive compound that makes you high.
