Cannabis seeds genetics

Cannabis genetics define the characteristics of the cannabis plant. The plant DNA is the hereditary (genetic material) which is found in plant cells. This carries information for the growth of the plant. Cannabis genetics determine which cannabinoids your plant will be rich in, how large it can grow and all the other important aspects of cannabis. Good quality, stable cannabis genetics are the key to growing high quality cannabis.

Cannabis genetics FAQ

How do breeders create new cannabis strains?

Crossing male and female plants of different strains is how new cannabis strains are created. If the breeding is done carefully the best characteristics (yield, potency, aroma, taste etc) of the parent varieties are passed on to the offspring. The new strain can then be stabilised over several generations of backcrossing. From this new strain you can create feminised seeds and autoflowering cannabis seeds.

What are F1 cannabis genetics?

F1 cannabis genetics means they are first generation from a cross of two parents. When one F1 plant is bred with another brother/sister (from the same batch) an F2 is created. With some poly hybrids, the best cannabis seed producers can require up to 10 generations (F10) before the cannabis genetics are regarded as fully stable and viewed as an inbred line (‘IBL’). This is because the parent genetics contain initially high levels of divergent characteristics which take longer to fully stabilise. The amount of breeding required to create an IBL depends on the genetics being worked with. For example with some stable landrace strains an F5 may well be stable enough to be considered an IBL.

How can genetics affect cannabis?

Cannabis genetics determine everything about the plant you are growing. For those growing cannabis seeds, the stability and consistency of the plants grown from the seeds is vitally important. Cannabinoid production, harvest quantities, aroma and other qualities also need to be delivered. To the cannabis grower, genetics are everything.

How to tell if you have good cannabis genetics?

Research your cannabis seeds carefully. You don’t really know what cannabis genetics you have until you grow them. There is a bond of trust between you and the seed company. If the seed supplier has done their job well you can expect consistently high quality results. Look for cannabis seed companies with a long track record for excellence and a good reputation with growers.

How to choose the right cannabis genetics for your needs?

Ask yourself what the most important qualities are you would like in an ideal world from your next cannabis grow. Do you like citrus flavours or a skunky taste? Lots of THC or a smooth hybrid offering THC in combination with CBD? Indica or sativa? Autoflowering cannabis seeds or photoperiod feminised seeds? If the options seem confusing try the Dutch Passion Seed Finder which guides you to the best cannabis seeds for you in a few clicks.
